This archival, hand-sewn journal/sketchbook is made from 100 gsm, white Hahnemühle Ingres mouldmade paper from Dassel, Germany, made on the same site since 1584.  It is sewn with Irish linen thread in the linked stitch pattern that was developed by the ancient Copts.  This stitch allows the book to lay open easily at any page.

The book’s endbands and bookmark are French goatskin, and it is half-leathered in Alran French goatskin that was processed at Rocky Mountain Leather Supply in Utah. Its boards are wrapped in a 1970 map of Italy.

The talisman in this book is a gilded commemorative coin from the 2005 investiture of Pope Benedict, featuring his papal crest.  Benedict was the first modern pope to step down while alive, and to accept the role of pope emeritus.  First day of issue Italian stamps from his installation are attached here.
