This archival, hand-sewn journal is made from 80 gsm Strathmore 100% cotton rag paper stitched with Irish linen thread in the linked pattern that was developed by the ancient Copts and discovered in Nag Hammadi, Egypt in 1945. Its endbands are red, green, and gold silk, and its bookmark is red satin ribbon. Its spine is covered in green leather, and its boards are wrapped in atlas pages for Indiana.
Treasure binding began with monks in the 6th Century who would encrust volumes with jewels. During the Renaissance, there was a resurgence in treasure binding. This is a contemporary revival of the treasure binding in which a lucky charm has been embedded in the cover of this book.
The talisman in this journal is a 1965 souvenir celebrating the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the city of Muncie, Indiana. It depicts the iconic Cyrus Dallin sculpture “Appeal to the Great Spirit.” Call it Middletown, call it Pawnee, call it home.
