Japan Album
N.B. This is a commissioned book and nfs.
This album is made from archival Hahnemühle Ingres white, mould-made paper from Dassel, Germany that has been molded on the same site since 1584, and sewn with waxed Irish linen thread in an intricate pattern modeled on the ancient “long stitch” binding method.
The spine of this album is made from Alran French goatskin that was processed at Rocky Mountain Leather Supply in Utah, and its boards are wrapped in a 1960 map of Japan and Korea. The case is lined with blue, Hahnemühle Ingres paper.
The talisman in this book is a Japanese 5 yen, Shōwa gothic style coin; these were minted from 1959-89. The coin shows a sheaf or rice, water, and a cog or millstone, representing Japan’s dominant agricultural produce and its refinement. The markings read: “State of Japan” and “Shōwa era.”
