Gold Rush

$100.00

This archival, hand-sewn journal/sketchbook is made from 80 gsm Mohawk Superfine archival paper stitched with Irish linen thread in the linked pattern that was developed by the ancient Copts. This stitch allows the book to lay open easily at any page.

This book’s endbands are brown and yellow cotton, and its bookmark is pigskin.  Its spine is covered in pigskin. Its boards are wrapped in a 1950 map of western North America.

The talisman in this book is a souvenir of Frontier Town Montana, “The Land of Shining Mountains.”  The American gold rush was effectively only 7 years long, from 1848-55.  Mildly successful prospectors convinced others to come west to buy their claims, based upon inflated estimations of value. But the American West was connected to its east coast because of the clamor to join the search to strike it rich. The real precious metal might have been the iron that made the railroads.
