This archival, hand-sewn album/scrapbook is made from 100 gsm, rose Hahnemühle Ingres mouldmade paper from Germany, sewn with Irish linen thread in the linked stitch pattern that dates back to the ancient Copts. This allows the book to lay open easily at any page.
This book’s green, gold, and red silk, and its bookmark is red goatskin. Its spine is covered in red goatskin, and its boards are wrapped in paper that was hand-marbled by Katherine Brett at Paybhembury Papers in Cambridge, England.
Treasure binding began with monks in the 6th Century who would encrust volumes with jewels. During the Renaissance, there was a resurgence in treasure binding. This is a contemporary revival of the treasure binding in which a lucky charm has been embedded in the cover of this book.
The talisman in this book is a commemorative coin from the Uffizi in Florence, depicting its iconic treasure, “David” by Michelangelo. The David is 17 feet tall and sculpted from a single piece of marble when Michelangelo was 26 years old. People died younger then. No use holding ourselves to such standards.
